BEAUMONT, Texas — Texas bluesman and gospel singer "Blind" Willie Johnson is being remembered with a historic marker decades after his death.
A ceremony was planned Wednesday in Beaumont to honor Johnson, who died in 1945, with a Texas Historical Marker.
The Beaumont Enterprise reports a death certificate indicates Johnson, born in 1897 and blinded as a child, was buried in a pauper's cemetery in the Pear Orchard neighborhood of Beaumont.
Supporters of the traveling singer and minister set up the Blind Willie Johnson Memorial Fund to help honor the musician and his recordings from the late 1920s to the early 1930s.

blind willie johnson died of malaria because his house burned down and he had to live on the foundation under wet newspaper until he died. also he was blinded when his step mother threw lye in his face when he was a child. Thems the blues

The saddest part of Willies story is why he was blind.

@mycolortv1 No, that was just a random picture I found to use. There is very little historical data on the man, and only the one known photograph of him.
