@CrawlingKingSnakeJM of overdrive a little more. I find that overdrive is infinitely more versatile, depending on the style of music you are playing. Each sound definitely has it's own applications and strongpoints. The best bet is to get both. That way you're covered. I will play a song with just a little hair, but when it's time to hit the solo it's always nice to fatten up my tone and come out big and loud. So that is my take on it. @CrawlingKingSnakeJM But one of the biggest and most notable differences is the sound. Distortion is usually thicker, has more saturation, but it loses a lot of clarity especially when playing anything beyond single notes and power chords. @CrawlingKingSnakeJM rely on the stomp box to add hair to your sound. For example I use an overdrive, and a distortion pedal. I use the Signa Drive for my overdrive needs which is pretty much everything, and a box of rock which is my distortion for a little bit heavier stuff. The BoR is supposed to emulate a dimed marshall stack, and it's pretty good for that, not the most versatile, but it gets the job done for me when it's time to rip a big solo, or something like that.

For example in a single channel amp when you push the tubes to the point of breakup that is true natural overdrive. In a multi channel amp there are different sections of the preamp that are used to push the amp into either a lighter overdrive, or a more saturated and thick distortion. In stomp boxes you usually us a totally clean sound from the amp, and...
