The story of 3 on a match comes from the war and this is the reason it's bad luck...
1. The sniper sees the flair of the match.
2. Taking aim at the site of where he saw it.
3. When the third man draws on the cigarette the Sniper squeezes the trigger and the third man on a match is now a corpse.

I saw many but not all of this great series during the late 1960s as a kid and this was one of my favorite episodes. I even bought the special 12 O'Clock High 3 mini B-17 diorama kit by Aurora company back then.
I saw more missed episodes when I was assigned at Hickam AFB, Hawaii about a decade ago. I liked the original movie too but I especially liked the song from the TV series. 1960s were a great decade for a kid to grow up and learn.
