Some people questioned the ability of hardware to actually play frequencies below 20 Hz (I had an earlier video of a sub doing 12 Hz), so here are a few more examples. It's nothing fancy, simply supplying enough power (volts + current) to a speaker to make it move.

In this case, I'm using a computer to generate "sub-bass" frequencies and pumping them through a Yamaha P3200 power amp running at 4 Ohms, 520 Watts to a Cadence 15" car audio-class subwoofer. The volume is turned up and down a few times for each frequency.

Note how at 3 Hz and particularly 1 Hz, the dropoff in performance is noted; the sound is still seen, but presumably the efficiency is quite low at this point and a lot of energy is required to make the speaker move. My neighbours would not be impressed, but I suspect these frequencies are too low and low-powered to carry through my walls.

It's also worth noting that YouTube videos don't seem to play at 30 fps, so it's hard to see the full detail here.

In fact, this video is rather crappy due to that - try viewing the same at vimeo [dot-com]/268968 .. you can also download the original high-res quicktime movie from there.

  • yo sub has no punch what so ever

  • At 6 Hz, subwoofers don't have "punch." The wave is inaudible! A bass kick would be a punch, but that is a totally different kind of sound. This is a constant, low-frequency wave.

  • It's possible to a human being to feel and maybe hear frequencies below 20hz if there is enogh sound preasure. (fan woofers can do that) And you dumb fucks there's no sound on this video and if there was sound than you would hear distorded sound and the sound of cone flaping.

  • There is sound, but the camera mic is really low-fi and would only catch the sound of whooshing air at best.

  • I disagree, the camera is certanly low-fi but it should capture at least mouse click and any tipe of noise.Take a look at other videos with ultra crappy mic's they have sound, distorded as hell but it's there. So this video dosen't have any sound, don't need to be a genious to figure it out.

  • Oops, you're right! I must have taken out the audio track altogether when exporting this video, since it was pretty moot. My bad.

  • man I have had that program for over a year and know next to nothing about it, the only thing I used it for was to peace together audio tracks etc. and now you with this video has opened new door for playing around further with this program so thanks for this video!!!!!

  • @Dantenv you can feel those frequencies, but not hear them. If I put my leg close to my sub and play 10HZ I can feel it easily.

  • whatz the name of the programm

  • sexy

  • Hah glhf with those speakers. They're probably fried now. Your sub needs to MOVE in order to cool the voice coils. If you're just sending in 1Hz you're basically cooking them.
