I was so lucky to have been at the Graham School in the 70's when Martha was alive. She came up to me at the end of an intensive 3 week workshop, walking very slowly from the front of the studio to the very back of the studio where I was seated on the floor and said, "Young man, you relate things very well." To this day I know myself as someone who relates things very well, not only in dance, but in the rest of my life.

Ballet technique is CLEARLY about beauty, is incredibly developed, and is the real content of it's choreographies. Contemporary Art in general, and dance is no exception, has always been about challenging and questioning rather than reassuring or calming. It's strength is that it's less about a familiar beauty, and more about ideas & investigations. That was a big part of what pushed dance out of the realm of craft and into the realm of art. Both have their place. Neither can replace the other.
