This summer, I went on a cruise aboard the Diamond Princess to Alaska. We went to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and I got some exciting footage of glacier calving on my HD camcorder of the Lamplugh Glacier!

ABOUT GLACIER CALVING:
Calving occurs when pieces of a tidewater glacier break off and fall into the sea. The creaking sounds associated with calving glaciers and the roar as pieces fall into the sea are as impressive as the visual scene. The beautiful blue colour associated with glaciers is created by the density of the ice which absorbs all the colours of the spectrum except blue, which is reflected.

Tidewater glaciers are glaciers that terminate in the sea. As the ice reaches the sea pieces break off, or calve, forming icebergs. Most tidewater glaciers calve above sea level, which often results in a tremendous splash as the iceberg strikes the water. If the water is deep, glaciers can calve underwater, causing the iceberg to suddenly leap up out of the water. The Hubbard Glacier is the longest tidewater glacier in Alaska and has a calving face over 10 km (6 mi) long. Yakutat Bay and Glacier Bay are both popular with cruise ship passengers because of the huge glaciers descending hundreds of feet to the water. This glacier type undergoes centuries-long cycles of advance and retreat that are much less affected by the climate changes currently causing the retreat of most other glaciers. Most tidewater glaciers are outlet glaciers of ice caps and ice fields.

Please thumbs up! Thanks :) The reason it is so "shaky" is because 1) the weather was super cold = numb hands and 2) I captured this on accident

  • As seen on The Huffington Post and Yahoo News (click the "show video statistics" box next to the view counter)

  • Kevin, GET A TRIPOD!

  • This was filmed on the Diamond Princess cruise in Alaska. The temperature was freezing and the security was extremely strict. From L.A., I flew to the airport in Alaska and took a shuttle to the dock where I boarded the ship. They do not allow objects like tripods that can be used as a weapon (like airport security) unless you have special papers.
