Like a cuckoo, the greater honeyguide lays its eggs in the nests of other birds - in this case, a bee-eater. When they hatch, the honeyguide chick mauls its foster siblings to death with a vicious bill-hook.

Cuckoo chicks use this method to eliminate other foster siblings, not to satisfy their hunger in the short term... but in the long term. Without the presence of the siblings, the cuckoo gets larger quantites of food from the mother, and is more likely to survive and reproduce as a result. 'DEAD BROTHERS DO NOT COMPETE FOR FOOD'

From the way I heard it described they just pierce them with their hooks until they die, they don't eat them.

But they don't do anything to their foster parents either and instead use them for food, letting them believe they are one of their own. So in a way, it is to satisfy their hunger.

  • Is it really an instinct to kill or just hunger?

  • Poor parenting.

  • Natural born killers.
