I can't believe you think that sounds quiet.
Not only does it have a faint diesel-like clattery rattle, but the intake air noise is unbelievable.
I also have an E46 330i, and it makes the same idle intake noise.
I have a 6.0 LS2 in my other car, and there's no such intake noise. I have also had a 3 litre straight-six in a Supra, and there is no such noise either.
I would like to find out what the cause is. My DISA is sealed and good. Maybe it's to do with the design of the ICV.

I have an E46 330i and the only performance item I have is the Signature Motoring performance CAI for about $160. The performance kit adds around 13.5HP on the dyno, sounds freaking great, and installs in under 30 minutes. Highly recommended.
-13.5 HP increase
-Lifetime filter
-SOUND AWESOME
-30 min. install time
Aside from the power gain, the SOUND is amazing at higher RPM but sounds normal in regular driving. I’m thinking about added high-flow exhaust next.

Opens at 4,000 rpm to allow more air flow to the engine

Hey man. If you pushed on the DISA unit did was clicking/rattling sound a bit more subdued? I need to do mine.
