ASU's More in the Middle studio focuses on the renewal and sustainability of the urban fabric within Phoenix, Arizona, and how architecture drives this change. During our final semester in the master's program, projects focusing on these concepts ranged from commercial to educational to residential, and all were located within a few miles of one another near the center of the city. This animation was my 'thesis' on the subject, focusing on the story of a semi-fictional family living in this neighborhood, and how these projects impact their lives and begin to implement change in the area.
Since the economic downturn and the collapse of the housing bubble, the rules for home ownership have changed. The "American Dream" is morphing; no longer does it resemble long rows of identical houses with white picket fences. This is especially true within the confines of large cities, where cheap land does not exist to accept the sprawl that naturally develops with growth.
This video looks at this change, how this change occurs, and the influence that our profession holds over even the perception of what buildings, neighborhoods, and cities are and can be.
