I was there today(or yesterday, at this point) for his 40th "birthday party." They have obviously made some changes, though it sort of had the atmosphere of a historical site like Mount Vernon or something. It looks like it's been well done, I had intended to get to the State Fair last year. Hopefully I will make it this time. I hadn't realized that the main house which is there now wasn't built until the 1980s.

You surely have a point but this is not the venue for it. To a person, everyone here cares deeply about horses, but this video is here to honor the greatest thoroughbred in recorded history. Perhaps your calling is to create a video that chronicles the sad ending of many horses - remember Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand, he was sent to slaughter in 2002.

This is great and all but about making a video of all the race horses who do not make it anf are sent to slaughter in Mexico each day .... what about honoring these poor souls ..... because that is the reality , making horse sracing " romantic " is simply sick ; ignoring the reality is simply making me ill

Sadly, Secretariat contracted laminitis in September 1989, and was put down 4 Oct, 1989.
He is buried at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky, next to his sire Bold Rular.
He was buried whole as a sign of ultimate respect(most great racehorses are buried head, hoofs, and heart).
I would stronly suggest Bill Nack's great bio, "The Making of a Champion".
Make sure it contains the essay "Pure Heart", an exceptional and moving first hand account of the last days of this great horse. T

i miss that horse so much but at least he lived a good life! can you still visit that place where he was bone and lived at? R.I.P BIG BOY

Dunno about visitors. The Meadow is currently owned by the State Fair of Virignia, and there's a lot of construction and repair work going on right now.
You can see everything from the road, however, except for the small horse cemetary where some pretty well known horses are buried.

Can you still visit the Meadow and is his foaling shed still there. I've read several stories about it, development of land etc. Also read of a goal by state of VA to preserve part with his birthplace.

Not sure about access to be "on" the property. It's owned by the State Fair of Virignia right now, but yes, you can still easily see all the buildings and the historical marker from the road, and the foaling shed is clearly visible. It's a little building off by itself down from the broodmare barn.
I was out there at the end of summer with a rep from the State Fair and he told me that they will be perserving the foaling shed and the other buldings, which is good to know.

Hello again, Fm 4/65 thru 5/69 I lived in Arlington off Rte. 50 rt across highway fm Fort Myer. How far south is the Meadow fm there? Is highway sign citing Meadow on Rte. 95? thanks Just curious. then I moved to the River House in So.Arlington near Pentagon end of May '69. Too think the following March 30 1970 Secretariat was born, what 60-70 miles fm where I lived ! Little did I know !

It's right down the road (maybe two miles... not far)from Kings Dominion/ Doswell exit on route 30... You could probably "mapquest" Kings Domion for drive time for drive time. Sign is on route 30 right at the Meadow entrance... drove by there a week of so ago, and they're doing a fair amount of work... looks like some roof repair on the old stables
