Yet a more conservative Islam, centred in the country's Asian heartland, is now coming to the fore through the current AKP government, and the country is in a state of flux. Public protests, allegations of coup plots and court cases around the right to wear headscarves lead to fears for Turkey's future.

Secularism is what made and makes Turkey a powerful country like the west. Why all of muslim countries not implementing secularism? I mean don't they realize that's the reason why they are behind economically and technologically? That is why USA and Israel are doing what they want to middle east. Instead of fixing social problems, some muslim leaders are wasting their energy about if its allowed to wear headscarf or eat pork. I think organized religion is the opium of the people.

@mirocreed in our ID cart, %99 turks are muslim:) according to government statistics or my ID cart I am a muslim. but we hate islam and it's dark age thinking. however islam is a powerful taboo for our society so % 30 turks dont pray anything and believe middle age dogmas however because of they dont want to conflict with status quo, they remain silent...

@legalsomali europe is christian country but is secular so i guess it doesn't make a difference. however i go against turkey consuming pork meat, and alcohol but allah did say people will be judged according to their own actions, so let him judge.
