A simple initiative in the Philippines is bringing a bit of brightness into the lives of the country's poorest people.
The project is called "Litre of Light", and the technology involved is just a plastic bottle filled with water.
It's an environmentally-friendly alternative to an electric light bulb, and it's virtually free.

@wlexxx Water refracts light; causing it to bend and travel in different directions. Because the bottle has those curves at the bottom, it makes the light shine in a wide area. If you didnt put water in the bottle, it would be the same as putting a hole in the roof; the light only shines in that small area where the hole is.
Make sense?

questions though
seems obvious, i can;t believe it is a new thing
why does water have to be in the bottle?
would also be nice to be able to replace / remove the bottle for ventilation
hard to do for non - tin roofs
