Why don't you loosen the strings before you turn the truss rod. doesn'tt that take more stress off the neck?

@Gspotkemps You should never adjust the truss rod with out tension on the neck, you could twist the neck.

So what makes you determine that you are checking the height with a feeler gage on the 8th fret? Some people do 6th... What's the rationale behind this?

What about doing this with a guitar with jumbo frets and so on.

@jonnyXrice You check the hight half way from the where the neck meets the guitar body. This is usually the 7th or 8th fret. Jumbo frets would not affect this procedure since they are still all the same hight.

@worldaccordingtojim Just to clarify, since you check from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string, the height of the fret itself does not matter. But just to be clear, jumbo frets are taller than, say medium frets.
