Three SD40-2 engines pull hard up the grade toward Brier Hill Road. The third unit is an SDP40-2. (Thanks to YouTuber "trainsmaniac2009" for the information. )

This is the eastbound ethanol train that was waiting at Davis Junction for two westbounds to clear. After videoing those two trains, I quickly drove one grade crossing east. But this train came out fast so I didn't have time for a decent shot. Clarke, (aka "Trainut" http://www.flickr.com/photos/56135304@N00/ ) was there also. I planned on trying for at least one more video attempt of this train even though it was "wrong way" for the sun. Clarke suggested that a video of this heavy ethanol train grinding up the grade at Brier Hill Road, east of Hampshire, might be interesting. That seemed like good advice, so I made the drive east and set up. Clarke had hoped that there would be decent sound of the engine pulling hard up the grade. Not sure if that worked out since it was a windy day and despite the use of my fuzzy microphone covers there remains a bit of wind rumble. Plus, the mics are too far away from the toughest part of the hill to adequately capture the sound.

Edited out a couple of minutes of tank car sameness.

The crest of the hill is visible a few hundred feet past the camera in the "going away" clips. The train starts to pick up speed after passing it. I calculate that there is a 130 foot rise from New Lebanon Road, 6.2 miles to the west, to this location. For us Illinois flatlanders, that's a big grade.

I called Clarke afterward and said that the location deserved another try on a less windy day and in the morning when the light was better for an eastbound train. I heard a track warrant for just that the next morning.
