The initial consonant also called sheng1 mu3 are placed at the beginning of all Chinese words to make the initial sound of the word. Some of the initial consonants are very difficult to pronounce such as sh as the sound doesn't exist in the English language. All of these will take practice to master, but don't worry too much as many Chinese people struggle to pronounce them all correctly.
