That's actually a long-ass time to be falling: Imagine you were falling and were yelling at the same time. You'd be like "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh--(take a breath) ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (take another breath) ahhhhhhhhhhh, get bored, play snake or solitare on your phone, look at your watch, start saying the Star Spangled bann--SMACK!

Anything that any space agency does is done because it is cool. If they can shoehorn something scientific into the plan, that makes it easier to sell to the accountants.
