The third day of the Great Central Railway's 'Autumn Steam Gala' on the 8th October 2011 with the theme of The Somerset and Dorset. This event ran over the weekend of the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th October 2011 and was sponsored by Steam Railway Magazine.
Featured locomotives at the event included visiting SR West Country Pacific No. 34007 'Wadebridge' (visiting from the Mid-Hants Railway) and SDJR 7F No. 88 (visiting from the West Somerset Railway). From the home fleet GWR Hall Class No. 4953 'Pitchford Hall', LMS 8F Class No. 48624, LNER N2 Class No. 1744 (not seen in this video), GCR 04 No. 63601, BR Standard Class 2 No. 78019, SR King Arthur Class No. 30777 'Sir Lamiel' and LMS 3F 'Jinty' No. 47406. All the action is seen from Woodthorpe and Kinchley Lane locations.
In order of appearance, No. 47406 is seen light engine heading towards Leicester North at Kinchley Lane Curve, No. 34007 'Wadebridge' (leading) and No. 88 double heading a passenger train towards Leicester North, No. 78019 also with a passenger working in the same direction, No. 34007 'Wadebridge' with a TPO working for Loughborough, No. 30777 'Sir Lamiel' with a passenger working for Leicester North, No. 88 with a passenger working for Loughborough, No. 63601 with the windcutters rake heading towards Leicester North, No. 47406 with a passenger working for Loughborough, No. 34007 'Wadebridge' with a TPO train for Leicester North, No. 78019 with the windcutters rake heading towards Loughborough. We then move to Woodthorpe where we see No. 63601 with the TPO train heading towards Loughborough, No. 88 on the mixed freight heading towards Leicester North, No, 30777 'Sir Lamiel' with a passenger working for Loughborough, No. 4953 'Pitchford Hall (leading) and No. 63601 double heading a passenger working towards Leicester North, No. 34007 'Wadebridge' with a passenger service for Loughborough, No. 78019 heading light engine towards Leicester North, No. 8624 with a passenger train for Loughborough, No. 47406 with a mixed freight heading towards Loughborough Station and lastly No. 30777 'Sir Lamiel' on a TPO working heading to Leicester North Station.
The highlights had to be No. 34007 'Wadebridge' and No. 88 double heading, re-creating the atmospere of The Somerset and Dorset Line when both these engines would have run over this line and No. 34007 'Wadebridge' and No. 30777 'Sir Lamiel' running together that also provided a Southern Region atmosphere to the event.
Good to see some recreated S&D action.
I was lucky enough to be on the last train (LCGB special) hauled by 'spam cans' Bude and Biggin Hill on 5th March 1966, photos of which still appear regularly.

@bankerbertha Thanks. I have to say that even if I had only seen the light pacific and the 7F together I would have still gone home a happy person! After seeing archive film of the light pacifics and 7F's on the S&D it was great that the GCR recreated the sight. I've seen old film of the last run in 1966 - I bet that's a sight that you've never forgotten, especially as it was the last service as well!

Great shots and what a fabulous display recreating the days of steam with main line passenger trains, branch line trains and the typical freight and mixed freight trains of that era

@NapierNimbus Thanks, the GCR are fantastic when it comes to recreating the workings of the steam era. This video is just under 3 hrs worth of workings from the morning till midday!

Great shots there. I particularly liked the smart TPOs and the coal train. Nice to see a complete & matching freight train like that on a preserved line. I really must visit this place one day.
