I finally got my mandarin dragonet/ goby to eat frozen foods. He's gotten skinny since he's been in the display tank so I may have to put him back in the quarantine tank to fatten him up. He can still hold his own against a green bird wrasse and an odonus trigger! on and there's footage of my cute little algae blenny!

  • beautiful mandarin! i'm planning to get one in the future.. also, when you feed raw shrimp is it cooked or uncooked? i know it sounds like a stupid question but.. i'm curious b/c i'm gonna start feeding some of my fish shrimp from my grocery store soon.

  • @doRYEmon it is raw shrimp. sometimes prepackaged frozen shrimps are treated with a preservative so try to get the never frozen shrimp from the grocery store.

  • Do you know any places where you can buy or order green mandarins?

  • @28GallonBowfront they mainly eat only live pods. It takes a lot of time, patience, and a little luck to get them to accept frozen foods like the shrimp in the video. I've never gotten on to eat dry prepared foods.

most online stores sell them. I like reefs2go

  • I've always wanted one of these fish but i live an hour away from any major pet stores so it'd be hard to get food for it.

  • just need patience and put the effort in training them to eat in captivity. if you decide to try, buy the largest one you can find so he can take larger foods.

  • ha! nice vid and music,my dragonet absolutely LOVES instant oceans brine shrimp gel

  • mine loves live bloodworms... they are fresh water, but they dance a lot as they die when put in saltwater. I use a pipette to shoot them to the bottom near him. I think its like fishing almost, get the bait to be presentable.

  • @tropimarine, have you ever counted how many shrimps your mandarin will eat during one feeding? I often wonder because mine would only eat from 5-7 mysis in one feeding. Live brine shrimps he would not eat that many, perhaps 3-4. perhaps because his stomach feels full at that time. Since copepods are tiny creatures I would imagine they eat tiny amounts all day long rather than a large chunk in the wild.

  • Mine has been behaving well.....I waited until there was an abundance of life in my tank before introducing a Dragonet.. he's called Capt Corelli as he is a mandarin!

Just in case he didn't have enough food I started a culture of copepods, (Real easy), of which I put 150ml in per week and he seems fine.....In fact, I now have a culture of brineshrimp going as well! My mandarin happily eats frozen brineshrimp (Thawed) when they land in front of him as well........

  • Awsome fish in that tank. I reallly want to get a mandarin dragonette, any advice on weening it to accept frozen food?

  • @Syford Have you heard that ORA should be releasing mandarins that are eating pellets this month? I just don't know where you purchase one

  • That eat prepared foods?
