You wake up and there's something there tugging at your sleeve. It's not the pitter-patter of the one in your dreams. Held on by the chain, the unbreakable chain. Held there by the chain, the unbreakable chain

You walk and you know that the wind is not passing you by
It's speaking and you listen and the tears don't come out when you cry cry cry cryin' won't break the unbreakable chain cryin' won't break the unbreakable chain

It's thirty years ago and you live with your decision
You talk to him in a prayer - you send out your transmission. But a prayer won't break the unbreakable chain. Your prayers won't break the unbreakable chain

Your baby's not yours but he walks the streets of your city
He wants to know you, there's no self pity
It's pulling at your heart, the unbreakable chain
pulling at your heart, with the unbreakable chain

And you, you put an ad in the paper - it's foolish but maybe
maybe he'll see cause he's searching for mama mi
oh mama here, mama feel the unbreakable chain
mama feel the unbreakable chain

You can't believe that it's now, it's turned itself around
You're frightened of the way that you look, but you meet him there in town. Oh, the joy and the fear of the unfailable pain
The joy and the fear of the unfailable pain

He stares at you and you step back and no words are spoken. You say hello to your boy and he says 'Mama you've awoken ah, yes you have broken the unbreakable chain - yes you have broken the unbreakable chain

You have broken the unbreakable chain
yeah, you have broken the unbreakable chain

  • Danny reminds me of some of the Quebec French Hippies we used to see out here in the North West back in the 1970s.They would make the trip across Canada to pick the "Magic Mushrooms" that grow out in the Valley east of Vancouver. He is really a very talented guy with impeccable taste and a beautiful artistic vision.

  • u think that sin has nothing to do w/the environment? there''s too much nuclear battleships in this world, some of them are suspicious. please george keep just cement in, send all of the nuke metal in the sun to melt. maybe u never feared

  • amazing how few hits I see among the Daniel Lanois gems on Youtube. Must only be because his listeners are too busy living the real life while the rest of the world is slacking off on Rebecca Black.

  • another incredible song from a guy who really understands it all

  • I was never put in the position of giving up one of my children, but as a mother I can understand what must be the worst heartache in the life of a woman.

  • Such a beautiful song from such an underrated singer/songwriter.

  • I was in Army training at Ft. Lee VA, doing my AIT stuff to basically learn my military job. I went to the PX and found this CD having had Acadie already. This album made those 3 months so much more bearable. I will ALWAYS remember the summer of 93' through this song.

  • I agree. I like Acadie and Shine better than Wynona, but this song is so.... perfect. (Although I don't think you can ever break that chain.) This and The Messenger... worth the price of the album.

  • This song is incredibly wonderful. Although I like his album "Acadie" much better than "For the Beauty of Wynona" I must state that this song is my all-time favorite of Daniel's songs right from the moment I listened to it for the very first time, back in '93.

  • I'm running out of adjectives. Tonight has been wonderful as I came and found all of these. And Laurie, I agree. I have all his albums playing on my iPod. Pretty much listen to him some of every day. Turn off the TV and plug in.
