The most effective way to make this pass successful is hands in his armpits, elbows low, head pressed against his stomach/chest. If/when he crawls his guard up you stand while keeping pressure with hands and head. Be sure to keep the elbows low and tight into his sides and only bend at the waist. His guard will crawl up creating space to slide the knee through. If he doesnt crawl his guard up then scoot the butt out while staying low and then stand. When you get the knee through hold tight ...

very nice pass. but putting your hands in the armpit would leave you open to omaplata right?

Would you reccomend this move for a short stocky guy? Seems that if someone is significantly taller than me I'll just be giving them an opening because Im moving such allot.
-
omg, what a weggie @ :42 that would get anyone off... outch! XD

I gotta try this in class I am sure ill need to contact you for help getting it to work. I got the back escape to work now ill go for this.

that's such an easy yet effective move for a guard pass. im definitely gonna use this move.
the thing is the guy in the bottom is not going to just lay there, he'll be attacking your arms, when you have your arms outstretched like that it easier to isolate your arm from your body for an armlock

Sure, that's the coolest thing about BJJ. The attacks will continue, as will the defenses.
I'm isolating a single move instructional purposes.
In this case, my hands pressing into his armpits (or biceps) are effective to slow his attacks down. If he pulls a higher guard, I would base back and drop my elbows.
Try the pass. It's a good one.

at 0:42 is it not "illegal" in no-gi competition to grab the clothing like that ?
cburcinc 3 years ago
Great question. The answer is that it depends on the referee and the competition. Generally speaking, the pants at the hip can be grabbed for passing guard, but not for holding an opponent down. It is very rarely "called" even in competitions where it is specifically illegal, if that makes sense. I have only seen refs complain of this a couple of times in my years of competition. If that means you are "gaming" the system a bit, that's ok.
