  • Its pretty hard to crack distilled water without an electrolyte. Your best bet is to use baking soda for casual experiments but as mentioned above, creates CO so ventilate. Lye or Caustic Soda work best but are sometimes hard to get. Tap water will work but is dirty and most will give off Chlorine gas. DO NOT USE SALT - Chlorine Gas BIG TIME.

  • If ypu remove the lamp, the voltage over the cell will increase and the amps will increase. i.e.

    1. Increase voltage over cell will increase amps

    2. Increasing baking soda will increase amperage

By the way: Your cell will produe Chlorine gas (Cl2) if you use salt. And kabing soda will produce CO gas. Not very healthy gasses. Use rather LYE (Sidium hydroxide), this will only produce O2 & H2 gas.

  • Hi HtwoOpower, I didn't figure out exactly how your cell is made, but if you want to bring up the amps without adding electrolyte, you must have more plate surface and they've got to be as close as possible. Also, tap water is more conductive than distilled water. Thanks for sharing your results.
