I've always questioned it even though I was taught over an over that it is due to the Lift Theory, the Four Forces, and so on.
I have always questioned why it has to be this way, however. How is it possible to feel this Infinite Peace, even though I could be on a constant state of alert and knowing that tons of aluminum, titanium, composite materials, plastics, fuel, seats, luggage, and over 200 Souls displace thru an apparent void at 8 miles a minute.
Together with all this brute force I can see marvelous landscapes, multicolor sunsets, stars on one side and the Rising or Setting Sun on the other. Voluminous cumulus clouds, smooth stratus, and the playful cirrus that appear every now and then. Clear moonlighted nights, nights full of stars, and the occasional shooting star as some lightning salutes from some far away thunderstorm.
Outside, however, temperature is 54 Degrees Celsius below, winds could be as fast as 200 Kilometers per Hour. Inside the Soul, though, an overwhelming sensation of Peace, calm and happiness. It is so hard to explain exactly.
Maybe that is why we fly and cannot stay far from it. That is why we learn airplane systems, emergency procedures, regulations, numbers, and data that is repeated over and over again.
So we can receive, maybe as a reward, however small instant it could be, for once more, that mysterious moment of contemplation. An while you wonder at the beauty of it all, you realize that it is impossible to be there and that you are flying at 940 Kilometers per Hour......
You look at your instruments, everything is ok. And you look outside once more, so to be overwhelmed by such beauty. You realize that the cities down below look so peaceful and you repeat to yourself, that it is possible that some day, Peace will rule The Earth.
How many times I wanted to step outside my airplane and see what it does. To move around and around, from every angle, so I can grasp the essence of that peaceful feeling intertwined with brute force and pure speed. It is impossible, obviously. Seated still inside my cockpit, I hear songs inside my mind while I am conscious that I am flying at 940 Kilometers per Hour.
I remember hearing songs while flying from long time ago. On my first solo cross-country flights I saw so much beauty that I would sing songs from the top of my lungs while I carefully watched my airplane's instruments and made sure my navigation was accurate.
Virtual Flying gave me as a gift one such instant as I was flying VATSIM from Fargo (KFAR), North Dakota, to Miami (KMIA)I found this virtual instant that has allowed me to try to express, in some way, what I have felt so many times in real life.
