Released in 2004 on Mute records.

They Were Wrong is a concept album about witches from ye olde Germany. Apparently, witches would convene at this place called Brocken Mountain, to celebrate springs victory over winter.

It's left field post punk influenced by noise, experimental electronic and witchcraft mythology. It all results into a very bizarre, jagged, noisy, tribal sound. It's extremely original.

Liars are very unique. The vocals are half sung half spoken, frequently move into chant forms. The drums are simple and tribal. The guitar and bass sound broken and out of tune. Lots of noise and synths are added to the mix. Liars have a very dark, punk sound, but also has a very prevalent sense of humor.

Lyrical content includes references to devils, being a horse, children, incantations, riding around on brooms, blood and ancient rituals.

Liars are definitely not for everybody. They have a very jarring, almost unsettling sound. It's strikingly original. There are a couple of atmospheric, dark ambient tracks that only add to the weirdness. Not a conventional album by any means.

I don't really know who to recommend this album to, but I dug it.

  • dude, what was the second song played called?

  • There's always Room On The Broom. It's the single off the album.

  • my ex-girlfriend listened to them so they're her band. i don't know much about them. nice review by the way! dark emo music about goth witches. i like siouxsie sioux.

  • Hahaha. Silly. They're not really emo. I guess they're kinda dark, but it's a colourful kind of dark. But I just like because it's pretty weird shit. It's inaccessible but in accessible kind of way. It's just fun to see how weird they're gonna be next.

  • dude all of the albums are pretty good in there own right. theres really nothing like the liars. and they are sooooo good live. =D

  • @fluffthebunny I don't know, I actually think their self titled one is really good. I think their newest one might be their weakest. Drum's not dead is their best for me, well, as far as flow. As an album it's great.

  • "oops I made a mistake on my guitar" has future song title potential for Liars

  • I haven't listened to Liars since their first album came out. But I keep hearing their song "The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack" in all these movies lately. When I found out that song was by them I could hardly believe it. It's so mellow and pretty, nothing like the other stuff I've heard from them.

  • I could never get into Liars. After listening to They Threw Us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument On Top, i just couldn't get used to the noise rock. Which is strange, because I like Wavves. not really sure why, but probably since Wavves is more lo-fi pop punk, and Liars is in like a totally different region.

  • That's a fucking epic song title.

  • Have you check out the offshoot Liars band, These Are Powers--lot of similarities. Their Taro Tarot EP is amazing. Also, I fucking love Matmos! I have to check this LP out. It looks nuts.

  • I've been listening to Liars for years now. My dad told me this album was a disappointment but I don't think it is. The worst one is their self-titled one. The "trench" album was the best. I have some of their old early singles which are just as good. Drum's Not Dead is also an album you should hear. Less post-punk and more tribal drone. I'm a Liars expert.
