No, it's actually always been a matter of financial consolidation. Religion tried to change it and is failing due to it's discrimination and bigotry. Marriage is completely unnecessary for the survival of a society, and a "family unit" can just as successfully (and more successfully in some cases) be made up of two same-gendered parents as two different.

Marriage is a social institution involving a man and a woman, for the purpose of having a family. Every other definition is just an attempt to degrade it. Marriage and the family unit is vital for a society to survive.

Actually, as married folk get tax benefits and other such things, the government is the only institution that should monitor it :) So as a democratic society, yes it is a right.

Okay, well even if it wasn't, you can't deny millions of couples the over 1000 legal rights that come with marriage. That's the very definition of unconstitutional. Yet, most of the country still gets away with it...not for long. :)

I could approach a debate without using profanities, but that would bring me far less satisfaction. This is the internet, where we are both basically anonymous, therefore the chances of me changing your personal beliefs are about zero.
