On May 19th, 2007, 2317 finally sets foot out onto the mainline after several years of down-time, proudly pulling a 6-car train all the way down 50 some miles through the Poconos to East Stroudsburg, PA.

  • oh, it returned? where was it before?

  • Haha, well she was on haitus... She hadn't ventured out onto the mainline in several years prior to this, and is now subject to the same fate once again. (She is no longer mainline certified anymore, she was only for the short time in 2007, I believe.)

  • mainline certified? mmmmm. well that sucks. so they can't get the right papers signed or something?

  • I'm not sure if I used the right terminology, but basically 2317 isn't allowed to go out onto the main because she has several minor issues from what I've been told.

  • is all of the track active mainline or is it abandoned?

  • It's all active mainline, used by the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad.

  • Man the 2317 has a beautiful horn....

  • They do, but from what i read its in pretty sad shape. The Railfan world would love to see a Big Boy in operation. But the mainlines are not what they used to be. The curves have been rebuilt for diesels, which don't need as wide of curves as large steam locomotives do. One reason railroads don't like steam is its hard on the track.

  • was this the only excursion she performed in this short period of operations between overhauling?

  • @Giants02122 I heard that after 3254 runs out of boiler time that they won't rebuild her and instead rebuild #759. But I can't remember where I saw that on youtube. They need to rebuild #759.

  • That stack talk at 1:00 sounds FANTASTIC!

  • @Robofish12 its called a whistle

  • I hear Steamtown's running a re-dedication excursion to East Stroudsburg to re-dedicate the Dansbury Depot. The power will be Reading FP-7's 902 and 903. In my opinion, 3254 would be better looking. Or the Lackawanna F-3 units because the Lackawanna was the railroad that used the depot.

  • @JoMiFu What sort of issues does she have?

  • @JoMiFu and now she can't going out because her 15 years/1472 days are up. She needs to be completely stripped down and rebuilt

  • I was on an excursion to Moscow and back behind the 2317 in 2007
