Tri-State reached a major milestone in its renewable resources portfolio in late fall of 2010, when it began receiving up to 30 megawatts of generating capacity from one of the nation's largest photovoltaic solar arrays -- the Cimarron Solar Facility located in northeastern New Mexico. The facility was officially declared commercially available on November 25, completed on schedule and within budget.
Tri-State is buying the output of the 250-acre facility under a 25-year power purchase agreement. The thin-film, photovoltaic solar plant features nearly 500,000 panels that generate enough power to serve the equivalent needs of 9,000 homes.
