The reason he chose Yuan Shang was because he was the only son to distinguish himself. Of course, anytime the eldest is not chosen, regardless of whether he's the most capable or not, it can lead to strife.  This and the example of Liu Biao's sons were brought up later to Cao Cao as a reason to choose Cao Pi over Cao Zhi.

I agree. Yuan Shao knows himself that 1st son - Yuan Tan and 2nd son - Yuan Xi did not really hold that kind of leadership power that 3rd son - Yuan Shang had. The same goes for Liu Biao's sons. Anyway, this also applies to our modern world where famed leaders can't just select successors just because they favour them.
