The first bit of mainline steam filmed with my new HD camcorder, a Panasonic HS60

Ex-GWR King Class 4-6-0 no.6024 'King Edward I' hauled the London Paddington - Worcester Shrub Hill - London Paddington tour 1Z24 'The Royal Oak' in celebration of her 80th birthday. She hauled the tour from London to Worcester via High Wycombe then Worcester to Reading via Gloucester & Swindon where the tour would then be diesel hauled to London.

Here she is seen storming up Sapperton bank towards the tunnel on the return leg of the journey.

  • Stunning performance by 6024, reminds me why I worked on restoring 6023, so I could see her do things like this. Great footage as always. Andy

  • @TopGearFan09 thank you Andy, it was an amazing performance =) According to uksteam 6023 is booked on two tours up Sapperton in July & October, hope she's ready by then =)

  • I was on this train and it's this kind of performance which reminds me why I have been happy to donate cash to 6024 for 40 years now! 6018- the engine Billy Butlin looked to purchase was reckoned to be the best King which is why she was selected for the 1948 exchange trails but 6024 since her return to steam has done work that is unquestionably the best ever recorded by any class member. Obviously, that does not include doing 108 mph like 6015 but her power output/performance is exceptional.

  • @NickRatnieks never a dull moment with 6024, lovely engine indeed =D Thanks for watching & commenting, had no idea 6018 was in the running to be preserved nor about the 108mph by 6015.

  • God the King class engines are beautiful.

  • @simonsteam aren't they just =) thanks for watching & commenting

  • @TopGearFan09 I hope so. If she is I'll be at Sapperton for her!

  • @letmadnessbegin In 1998 6024- running as 6018 ran from Leeds to Kings Cross- repeating the 1948 exchange run by 6018. I was told at Leeds that Billy Butlin agreed to buy 6018 and she was put through the works. A disagreement over the cost for the work blew up and the loco was dumped back on her wheelsets and towed out to the scrap line and cut up. The story might have been embellished over the years but it's a shame. I don't know if Butlin bought another LMS pacific instead!

  • @steampipe48 thank you =) yeah, there'll definitely be room for more traffic once it is doubled

  • Great video, i live near Stroud and watched 6024 thunder through the station, maybe

we will see much more steam action when Network Rail fianally double the track

    between Kemble and Swindon!
