We have Branch Rickey to thank for the way baseball is today, as he was responsible for bringing Jackie Robinson to the major leagues!

(This project was completed by my son, Kyle, for his 11th grade history class in the Spring 2009. It is a compilation of video and photos, with a voice over by Kyle.)

  • I really appreciate this video. I'm just a teenager from Portsmouth, Ohio, and I'm not much of an athletic-oriented person.

But I think it's great that someone was able to make such a difference, especially someone from my hometown.

I knew about Branch Rickey, and that he was a pretty famous character from this area, but I had no idea he was responsible for signing Jackie Robinson, he's a lot larger than I thought!

    Love the video!

  • This is a great presentation. Branch Rickey Graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH in 1904. There is a wealth of information on him there and how his coaching baseball and football at the university inspired his view of race in sports before Jackie. For example, Branch coached Charles Thomas, a black student at OWU in both baseball and football. Branch learned a lot from his time with Charles Thomas, seeing firsthand the segregation that surrounded this young man at the time.
