  • Thanks for posting this. It was a talented field, 3 horses had run sub 2 minute 1 1/4 races prior to this (It's the One, Silver Buck, Perrault). None of them fired, Perrault had a bowed tendon. Also notable were the horses that missed the race (john henry, winters tale, island whirl, gato del sol, alomas ruler, conquistador cielo).

BTW do you have the woodward or jcgc from 1982? Thx again.

  • You're welcome. Wow, some excellent horses missed this race. What a stellar field that would have been, one of the best. Thanks for the terrific input.

I don't have either of the races you mention, but will keep them in mind. Sorry.

    Take care.

  • Thanks for sharing all these priceless races!

Muttering was 1982's Santa Anita Derby winner. His name was a witty takeoff on that of his sire: Drone.

Perrault broke down in this race and didn't run again. He had beaten Lemhi Gold in setting a course record in the second Arlington Million.

Timely Writer broke down later, in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, which was also won by Lemhi Gold.

  • You're very welcome. Thank you for sharing the important information with us and for viewing. Shame about Perreault and Timely Writer.

    Take care.

  • Muttering? Is that the correct name? Lemhi Gold sure drew away in the stretch; it's interesting how the distances of this race changed so many times over the years that it was run.

  • Yep, you heard right. Muttering...an unusual name for a horse, but really quite amusing. Lemhi Gold was much the best here, and the field was fairly deep. A very impressive performance.

I suppose the Marlboro team wanted to keep the interest in this race up by experimenting with distances. I like the mile and a quarter distance best. It's the truest test of classic horses, in my opinion.

Thanks for the comment, my friend.

  • @cf1970 Actually, that was more NYRA alternating the Marlboro and Woodward as the first two legs of the Fall Championship Series for several years. It would remain in this format through the final Marlboro Cup in 1987 (when Marlboro ended its sponsorship of the race).

  • Did Silver Buck ever race again after this?

  • Lehmi Gold was a true in-and-outer, looking absolutely brilliant in some races, and dull in others. The brilliant half was well displayed in a 7 length win in the grade 1 San Juan Capistrano at 1.75 mile on turf, this 8.75 length Marlboro win, and his 4.5 length triumph in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

  • I remember Silver Supreme. He had an amazing late kick and I thought that he would win the JCGC at a mile & a half, but he took an incredibly wide turn into the stretch that day and settled for second.

  • .... Where was that Silver Buck put down? i mean I knew a Silver Buck and he was my best friend and he used to race ...

  • he bowed a tendon. you can see him back up quickly around the far turn. he never raced again but had big moments earlier in the Santa Anita Hcp and Marlboro Cup
