Don Zeunert of IBM talks about the ability to achieve significant ROI in a short period of time through mainframe server consolidation using a z/Linux solution.
Transcript: Traditionally, a lot of the data centers have been looking for a three to five year payback on investments but over the last two years pressures have gotten a lot more serious and customers are looking for one to two year payback. What can you do today to get that kind of an ROI?
One of the things everybody's talking about is server consolidation and with System z server consolidation you can see 80 percent reduction in power and floor and significant reductions in software license costs because you might have had 1,500 licenses go down to maybe 7 licenses for your software. So what we're seeing as customers move to z/Linux is $11 million payback ROI in one year.
It's quite significant and one of the things that you're probably concerned about is well, z/Linux is kind of new. What's out there to support me and my workload? And Tivoli has ported over 80 products to help you manage your workload on System z. We have all of the traditional distributor products that have been out in Tivoli for many years, very stable products that are now running on z/Linux to help you manage the Workload, Scheduling, Automation, Process Management, Change Management, Service Desk, Service Catalog. All these products are available to help you manage your enterprise from a System z platform.
