Chapter 27

Demi played with her fingers as Joe watched her. "Busted." She whispered. He grabbed her hands, making her stop playing with her fingers and look up at him.

"Demi...How long has...it been happening?" Joe asked. Anger boiled in his veins. He was mad at her parents, how could they do this to her? He was also mad at her for not saying anything...not telling him.

Demi swallowed, she could feel the tears coming. It's funny how this subject could completely tear her walls down. "A while." She breathed.

He sighed. "Did you tell anyone...ever? Does anyone know about this?" He asked. Demi shook her head. He sighed angrily.

"I couldn't tell anyone..." She said, quietly.

"Why not?!" Joe asked, standing up and throwing his hands in the air. He was so angry that she didn't tell anyone and get help. Demi's so small and if he hadn't shown up Patrick could've killed her!

Demi looked up at him, he was so big. Like her Dad. He looked so powerful too. "Are you gonna hit me?" Demi asked softly. Joe's face softened and he put his hands down quickly, shocked that she'd asked him such a thing.

Demi flinched at the sudden movement. "No...No I'm not, Demi. You should know that. I'd never...ever hit you." He promised her in a gentle tone. Demi could feel the tears dripping down her face.

Demi looked down and lifted up her shirt slightly, revealing her bruises stomach and ribs. Joe gasped. Her ribs had fresh bruises, some old bruises turning slightly yellow.

"oh, demi." He whispered, he touched them with his fingers lightly. Demi whimpered lightly. "Demi, we're gonna throw him in jail!"

Demi quickly pulled down her shirt and shook her head frantically. "What! No! No! No!" She disagreed. "This is between you and me. No one can find out about this!"

Joe scowled. "What!?" He growled. "Demi! He's fucking hitting you! I'm not...no, we're telling someone. I don't care what you think Demi! We're telling someone!"

"No! Joe, please!" She sobbed. "He'll...He--He'll find out. Then--Then he'll come back for me and he'll...he'll hurt me."

Joe stared at her then shook his head. "No. No, I won't let him hurt you. I won't let him touch you again or let him near you again." Joe assured her. He then thought about Demi's mom. "did your mom know about this?"

Demi nodded. Joe was outraged that she didn't do anything to help Demi. "She knew..." Demi said. "Sometimes she would sit on the stairs and she'd just watch.." Demi sobbed. "W-What---W-Who are y-you gonna t-tell?"

"The police. My mom. Nick." He said, he wrapped his arms around Demi, hugging her tightly. She cringed in pain, he pulled away. "Demi, I need to take you to the hospital."
