DEADLY CITY DEMOLITIONS

Two people have been confirmed dead and a young girl seriously injured this morning after security operatives attached Kampala Capital City Authority, shot at a crowd. A team of KCCA officials led by Director of Physical planning George Agaba, demolished illegal structures at Luzira, however a scuffle ensued as residents tried to stop KCCA officials from destroying their property. In a movie-like scene, gun wielding men jumped out of George Agaba's car aiming and shooting at the charged crowd. Old Port Bell Road was closed off during the chaos.

On the whole, NTV Uganda has given us skewed (factually) and untruthful coverage on this matter which has generated unnecessary hoopla.

The underlying governance question for all of us is: is it acceptable for individuals to attack (seek to lynch) Government officials when they are carrying out, or in this case have finished, their lawful duties?

Or you may simply click on our name and go to the channel. It was after the demolition exercise which was a lawful undertaking that the crowd attempted to lynch the KCCA officers. The loss of unfortunate but the officers were acting in self-defense. Some mistakes could have been made but the context is clearly one of an intense search for safety.
