This is a "neon" tube from the 60's. The arc is in mercury vapor (you can see drops of mercury inside the tube) and the coating converts the UV to blue light.

  • Interesting tube.

    Nice piece of electrical history

  • nice little tube. the mercury vapour is supported by tiny amount of gas. this tube looks to be 15mm (1/2") diameter so it will have around 11mbar of argon in there. maybe a little neon gas too 25%

nice to see a pair of old can electrodes doing a good job.

    sweet

  • This is Super Cool, like Robbie the Robot had when he spoke. I have been wanting to see this footage of raw mercury vapor lighting so I could have a visual understanding of it. Thanks for the demonstration. Mikie
