Carlos Spencer is, in my not unsubstantial expert opinion, (my traditional NZ upbringing not only helped to hone my skills of analysing rugby, its players, teams, games, but also my ability to completely rubbish the opinion of others!) the second greatest back of all time, after Christian Cullen.

The 2002 NPC was a big turning point for Carlos, the 2002 NPC was when Carlos finally took over Merhtens as the main fly half, then that form continued into 2003. But in 2004 he had a poor year, he was still chosen as NZ's main first five with Dan Carter playing 12, but when NZ got their asses kicked in the Tri Nations they dropped both Spencer and Merhtens, Dan Carter took over as our first five for the first time in the end of the year tour later that year. I wish YT had more NPC footage
