Feuerzangenbowle (Fire Punch)
Recipe
151-Proof Rum (approximately 1 to 2 cups)
Sugar Cone (available at GermanDeli.com http://www.germandeli.com/norzuc.html)
2 bottles Merlot
1 cup orange juice (pulp-free)
½ cup lemon juice
8 orange slices
8 lemon slices
4 cinnamon sticks
10 whole cloves
In a large stainless pot combine everything but the sugar cone and the rum. Heat the mixture over medium heat until hot, but not boiling. Pour the hot mixture into a heatproof glass punchbowl set*. Light the candle below the punchbowl to keep the mixture warm.
Place the Stainless steel "bridge" across the glass punchbowl and place the sugar cone on top. Carefully pour the 151-proof rum over the sugar cone, rotating the cone to make sure the whole cone absorbs the rum.
Immediately turn the lights down low, gather your guests around and use a long gas lighter or long match to carefully set the cone on fire. Allow the flame to "melt" the sugar, which will slowly drip into the wine making a show for your guests and filling the room with aromatic scents of the holidays.
Serve the hot punch in a heat-proof clear glass with a handle. You may garnish each glass with an orange and/or lemon slice and a cinnamon stick, if you wish.
*Equipment: The special heatproof glass punchbowl set with stainless steel "bridge" and the sugar cones are available from GermanDeli.com in their store at 5100 State Highway 121 in Colleyville, Texas 817-354-8101 or online: http://www.germandeli.com/feuerzangeset.html
