LOL. That's because that's the storyline of the video. If you look closely, you'll notice it's a re-telling of the Wizard of Oz. The girl is dressed as Dorothy with her three friends and her dog. The band up there performing are phonies. John is "Oz". That's why at the end the curtains are pulled back and they expose the "wizard" behind the illusion, so to speak.
