Canon T2i/550D footage shot in Quitman, Arkansas on the way back from a family reunion.

Cropped and graded in post, in the outdated Vegas 6. Didn't transcode the video before dropping it into Vegas - I've noticed a quality loss during transcoding, and importing without converting seems to work fine in manageable amounts. Shot at 60p and slowed by a factor of 2 in post. I turned off resampling to eliminate ghosting at the suggestion of someone on YouTube, but found the slowed 60p much less smooth with Smart Resampling in Vegas disabled.

As noted by the visible blue sky in the wider shots, the camera holds a decent dynamic range (blue, visible darkness in the sky with a still properly exposed ground) when shot with the Marvels Cine Picture Style - as I shot with here.

All shot on the 18-55mm kit lens, all handheld. So excuse the shake. Mostly all zoomed in, at 55mm for an aperture of f/5.6. Shot at 200 and 400 ISO, respectively.

  • This video is a very nice demonstration of what the kit lens can do in Video mode! But why is it that your pans are jittery? Is the original footage @ 60P also jittery?

  • @myphrase It's the rendering to 24p in Vegas 6. The editor is (obviously) far outdated, especially for even handling HD footage. But my laptop is relatively old and that's what I have installed on it, so when I'm in a remote/disconnected area I just edit the stuff on my outdated machine and upload it next chance I get. Some rendering glitches, but as its a test and I'm shooting for fun in a closed-off area, the result is what it is. Same goes for the Petrified Forest, AZ video.

  • I notice that the kit lens is a not sharp in low light. even in really bright conditions the image seems to be less sharp than canon 50mm 1.8 II. Thats what on my list for christmas!

  • @Dimitry49 Lenses with apertures open (as in low light) will never be ideally sharp as it stands. But the kit lens is definitely sharper than the 1.8, given the 1.8 is just worse glass. Faster aperture, so better DOF, but not as sharp. The 1.8 at f/5 is nowhere near as sharp as the kit lens at the same aperture.

It's really manufacturing/quality standards. The kit lens isn't great, but it's metal, IS and newer, more expensive glass. So it's going to be sharper. This video has diffusion.

  • What version of Marvels Cine was this? 1.2 or 3.3 I like the contrast and colors. Great work!

    Subscribing too..

  • It seems pretty weak but I mean it is only a kit lens, there shoulnd't be too many expectations with it. Definitely not going to complain about it, looks fun!

  • As for editing .MOV its not as simple if you are using Movie Maker on windows XP & Vista (I think MM on Win7 supports it though) because it's not natively supported. I have a T1i and when I do videos I usually convert to a Windows friendly format.

  • @StockensReel Hi, you can edit MOV with almost any video editor around, what software are you trying to use?

  • I got this camera 2 months ago and I'm in love with it :) does anyone know what the music is called?

  • is it good to encordec the footage before editing?

  • Nice footage of the wheat field. Do you mind if I use part of this footage in a family video? I won't be selling it just showing it to for a 50th anniversary. We have a wheat field, but I didn't get the chance to get some footage with my camera.
