It's hard not to become more cynical as you get older: after you've witnessed enough bad behaviour, wariness and cynicism come to seem like pretty serviceable attitudes. One time when I felt "suckered" the best approach seemed to be to compliment myself on my kindness and patience and not be too hard on myself for being taken in. After all, it's fairly easy to deceive people. On the other hand, it takes a certain generosity of spirit to trust them.
