  • think a lot of you missed the point of the song. The "fine old woman" is Ireland, the four green fields are Ulster, Munster, Connaught, and Leinster. Children starving was the Great Irish famine of 1845. One of these four green fields is still "in bondage" until this day, Ulster. This song is about Ireland as it was and then as it was when those bastards from across the water came over. ÉIRE ABÚ.

  • dont no much bout him but tht song is just a classic, fair play, sang very well, some song!!!!!!!!!

  • What a song

  • Well said imsumup.

  • this man can tell a story. beautiful.

  • I love this great song as I am of Irish heritage, but my wife always interprets it literally and hates it! She seems to think the silly old woman is quite happy to see her husband, sons and grandsons sacrificed to save her stupid cow paddocks! Then again, my wife's ancestors are Scottish, so what can you really expect? Only kidding, McTavish!

  • @nietaksky I am English & my favourite singers include Sean Cannon, Luke Kelly. Ronnie Drew Van Morrison. Paul Brady.Sean Keane do you want me to keep going, o/k Planxty, Liam o'Flynn. Andy Irvine Donal Lunny & this song is magic. Don;t lump everyone together.

  • 1 person is British

  • @imsumpup Love your take on the meaning of this song. I just presumed it was wrote from someone who had or knew someone who lost their land/livelyhood to richer land owners and it was taken from the mothers point of view. Didn't realise it was meant to be read between the lines now i'm going to do everyone's heads in who sing this song thinking the same as me lol. Pretty clever lyrics going on then really. Beautifull ballad whatever way you want to look at it.

  • Makes it VERY hard to be away from the fields, especially when you live in the strangers land. The only person to do it as well as / better than Makem himself.

  • @liampc I feel the same way !

  • Brilliant song Jim mccann sings it really well he really gets across the meaning of the song
