"We choose to go to the Moon"

As we sit at the precipice of a new era of exploration, I thought it appropriate to revisit the original inspiration and rationale for the first lunar exploration program as so eloquently stated by John F. Kennedy. The original speech by JFK was held in Houston, TX at the Rice Stadium in the fall of 1962.

"Many years ago the great British explorer George Mallory, who was to die on Mount Everest, was asked why did he want to climb it. He said, 'Because it is there.' Well, space is there, and we're going to climb it, and the moon and the planets are there, and new hopes for knowledge and peace are there. And, therefore, as we set sail we ask God's blessing on the most hazardous and dangerous and greatest adventure on which man has ever embarked."

  • @MrStevenjamestrue Russia might have beaten us to be the first ones in space, and return safely. But the US was the first to go to a lunar surface, and return safely. Not only that but we will be the first to go to Mars. While that happens Russia will be dealing with its crumbling economy, and dwindling population. There is more to go to other then just the moon, there is an entire universe to explore.

  • @hayden50 I wasn't trying to offend any individual as you seem to enjoy doing, and I apologize if I did. But instead of replying with a typical anti-Obama hypocrisy, try reputing with facts instead of assertions and I would be happy to debate the topic. I am by no means a full fledged Obama supporter myself, but I will acknowledge traits and actions where they're due.

  • @MrStevenjamestrue Britian had it's accomplishments but Saturn V Rockets and Moon Exploration were dominated by America. I guess i forgot about the British space program that no one has ever heard of. "We choose to sip tea and smoke american tobacco on the Moon."
