I think this song is trying to make people realize that a person did these crimes. It makes it much easier to deal with when you can just call the person a monster and be done with it, but thats not how it is. he was a person with feelings and secrets just like all of us. He just did horrible things, but things that are within the spectrim of reality for normal people

A similar thing is done for Hitler, People forget that he was a human just like everyone else

"they were boys with their cars, summer jobs. Oh my God". That part always has the biggest affect on me.

To me this song provides us with an understanding that no one is inherently evil. We are all a product of our experiences. When is the line between the broken kid you feel sorry for, who becomes a bad man you hate? As Sam Harris says, if you were to change place with Gacy atom for atom, you would be him. Understanding causes allows us to prevent others like him, rather than punish and hate and keeping the cycle going.

You think Tim Curry made clowns terrifying?

Pennywise didn't lure many young men to a homosexual's basement to rest permanently.

i agree and disagree with many.. To me,,,,the song is about sin, sadness and circumstances. Even though it explains Gacy JR/ it isnt asking to feel sorry, i feel its telling his story// even if it is a horrific and depressing one- that leads to the sorrow of the singer saying he made it through life as well pretending(in my best behavior i am really just like him) its a very "man in the mirror song" i dont think the group feels bad for him atall even if he was an "artist" a killer is a killer

And for the idiots out there who will most assuredly take that comment incorrectly, yes the word "fact" is subject to opinion.

Sufjan Stevens is a Christian so "the secrets I have hid" line is in reference to the fact that we all have the same sin nature. Gacy's crimes were of the worst possible kind but we like him are all in need of a good checking of the floorboards. Just clearing that up for those who were wondering.
