An up-close look at the new Vancouver streetcar demonstration project with their partners at Bombardier. The Flexity streetcar is the first low floor streetcar in use in North America. Transportation systems planner and commentator Stephen Rees gives his first impressions of the track, and the cars themselves.

The streetcar is in operation between January 21 - March 21, 2010 and is located beside Granville Island and the Olympic Village Canada Line station.

  • Is that the same new street car replacement for Toronto ??? It look similar to a picture how Toronto new street car is going to look

  • I saw these in Metro Magazine,And I'm IN LOVE!!!!! It looks sooo sleak, and I love the wheel coverings. And I love Bombardier-branded light-rails,high-speed rails and Jets.

  • So they built the track and stations... why not just buy the cars now???

  • no is catenary above the line. Here from a ling time we have electic locomotives above 7000hp. oly concreate sleepers are here. locos are very hevy and is powered with 27000volti ac power in catenary wire.

  • HI does the street cars tracks has electricity in it already?

  • Thanks for interesting views and talking about this streetcar. I think It is very good idea to built tram system to the city. They are space effective, environmentally friendly. They will encourage people to use public transport. I create cities much more human and nice. I think Vancouver should build not only Olympic line but also return streetcars to the city and build more tracks. Will be normal streetcar system constructed in the future?

  • The noise is not coming from the brakes, it is the signalling sound to warn for its arrival. It is loud indeed, but required in Brussels as the tram mixes with normal car, bike and pedestrian traffic.

  • Why does this transit only last during the olympics. it should be there to stay for the benifit of everybody in Vancouver even if it cost a regular transit fee. It should defenitely be Vancouver's future mass transit and I hope there will be lots more to come on all those old train tracks around town.

  • It's 2010.... and the brakes/wheel bearings are still so loud???
