Chapman made a martyr out of Lennon, making Lennon even greater than ever, in the eyes of the people. All Chapman did for himself was ruin the rest of his life and be vilified by the people.
If he could go back in time to Dec. 8, 1980, would he have spared Lennon? I would hope so. Nothing we can do about now though, is there? :-(

Chapman was off-the-charts crazy, but in real life he didn't come across like that. He was just a regular-looking, regular-acting, well-spoken guy. His landlord in Hawaii said as much when he was interviewed by the press after the murder. I've known a couple of people who have major mental issues (but are non-violent), and most of the time you can't tell anything is wrong with them, unless and until they do something crazy. That's how MDC was able to do what he did. He didn't look threatening.

Chapman wanted to kill Lennon when he was getting the autograph but John's niceness put caught MDC off guard..he would later say that he talked himself into doing it when he came back..
