  • The point is that the shannon route was, and still is, a profit making route... there is no knowing if Belfast will even break even. No, this is a move motivated by politics and not economics. When the decision was being muted to sell off aer lingus the government decided to hold a stake to guard against situations just like this. I'm sure you can remember the words "strategic assets" and "national interest" being used over and over again.

  • (continued)... What could more strategic that keeping a route that fosters thousands of jobs in the West. We are about 5 years away from having real connectivity in the Limerick/Clare/Galway area. Millions have been and are being spent to finally connect these areas (Limerick tunnell, Ennis bypass, Western Rail Corridore, Gort/Crusheen Bypass).

  • (Continued)... In five it will be possible to get from Galway to Limerick in a train or a car in roughly an hour... this move cuts the legs out of all of that.

Moreover the governemnt have already used their stake when Ryanair were trying to buy out the company. This is a situation brought about by the government for it's own North/South political ends.

  • (continued) then ask yourself why did they choose Shannon? Why not reduce the number of flights from Belfast? Possible reasons are: The Shannon issue can be fudged, it is political, and the figures weren't calculated.

PS I apologise for my spelling mistakes (my lunch ends soon so I was rushing)

  • (continued) PS S350XWB please do not quote facts or present points as facts when you have no proof. Not alone is the Shannon-Heathrow Route profitable for AerLingus, over the past four years this profit has increased at a sharper rate than any of the other airports flying to Heathrow!!! This is a fact! It is undisputed and from AerLingus' own calculations. So

  • (continued) and Texas with 700 seats full on each flight utilising "their" Heathrow asset to its full potential and "possibly" making a seven fold increase on their profits. On the downside Irish people will have to fly Ryanair to Stansted and somehow get to Heathrow. But it is going to make a bigger profit!!!!

  • Oh did you here!!!!!

AerLingus are going to move all 20 odd routes it has between Dublin and Heathrow to America. This is great news for AerLingus's shareholders (except the 25% owned by the Irish people)since by buying 20 new Airbus 380s they can now travel between Heathrow and JFK, Chicago, LAX,

  • The biggest loss Aer Lingus have caused is the 45 jobs from their own company. They cannot be held responible for the loss of local business, protecting other businesses not the job of a publically listed company. What Shannon should be doing is not demanding Aer Lingus to keep the route but to spend as much time as possible to look for a new airline to replace Aer Lingus, any other airport would do the same. After all aviation is a business it's there to make money.

  • I agree the government are using their stake for the good of Aer Lingus and profits over the people and business however Shannon-Heathrow is profitable but only just, all their research has suggested Belfast will double Aer Lingus profits. Ryanair and any other airline would do the same, go where the profits are.

  • Very interesting video! I can understand the anger and dissapointment from the people of the west howvever Aer Lingus is now flying on it's own and should be allowed to do so. A lot of the posters said "hands off our slots" the slots were never Shannons, they belong to Aer Lingus. "People not profit" then whats the point of an airline if its loosing money? At the end of the day Aer lingus is an business just like any other.
