Yes indeed it has been lost for the most part. The soviet ballet was THRILLING and the men in particular were both lyrical and powerful. Today in general, technique is better but passion is gone.

Ballet has indeed evolved a lot since then, but on the other hand we don't seem to see such powerful lifts anymore. And is it just me, or has some of the 'raw' excitement also got lost?

Я думал, что так и не встречу на TUBE Людмилу Богомолову, она не была великой, она не танце-вала парадные спектакли. Но именно она определяла качество балерин Большого театра. Она прекрасно танцевала Одетту, Китри, Жизель, Золушку и др. Она редко ездила за границу, но, когда Григорович возил свои фундаментальные и помпезные спектакли за границу, в отсутствии притянутых к этим постановкам великих, можно было прийти в Большой театр, увидеть Богомолову и сказать – это великий Большой театр.

I was dancing at the time I saw this for the first time and couldn't believe what I had just seen. Remember, at this time videotape, etc didn't exist and the only way one could learn ballet was from a good teacher and once in a while a touring ballet company or art house ballet film. Russia and the US weren't on very good terms.
