  • Dear Dr Lee Cohen yesterday, i was at Orchrestra practice and i was coming off the stage and the next thing i knew, i'm on the ground in pain and my right shin is all bloody and i can see my bone. I had to go into surgery for my shin today, but today also, i was crutching to the bathroom and my left ankle hurt like heck! would this be a stress fracture or not?

  • Stress fractures take time to develop. This is probably pain resulting from putting too much weight on the ankle.

  • I was recently diagnosed with a stress fracture in the proximal tibia. (Not a severe one, but something in between). I had pain on the inside of the knee that escalated during exercise. My doctor said to rest for 6-8 weeks. Is there any additional nutritional supplements that can speed up recovery and make sure it does not happen again?

  • I don't think there's anything specific that will speed up the recovery. Make sure you're eating well, and I'd recommend a multivitamin.

  • Hello Dr. Lee Cohen,

I've just recently started increasing my fitness level because i'm getting enlisted in march...i was in mediocre shape before i started running and now i feel that i am in fairly good shape, but a few weeks after i started to pick up my runs i started to get pains 1/4 of the way between my ankle to knee, on my left shin..i feel it a bit during the day doing casual activities, and sometimes not at all, but as soon as i start running i feel it for the run, and even more after

  • Thank you for enlisting to serve our country. What you are describing could be either a stress fracture or a precursor to a stress fracture (called a stress reaction). I'd recommend seeing a health professional for an x-ray or a bone scan.

  • Dr Lee Cohen i have been to the doctor for foot pains. it is on the top of my foot and there was a little swelling. they told me it was either tendonitits or a stress fracture...i really want to play on our teams first scrimmage but im going back tuesday to see if i get released. I really wanted to know if it is only tendonitits how would i get rid of it fast?? or wether it is a stress fracture or just tendonitits.

  • Get a good biomechanical exam and follow a good stretching program.

  • You need a doctor to give you a postural exam. It sounds like your foot mechanics are off, and/or you have flat feet or a high arch foot. You may need a different type of running shoe, cushioned vs. stability of motor control -- check a good running shoe store for this. Also, adopt a good stretching program to prevent injuries to hamstrings, calf muscles, plantar fascia, etc.

  • ...i'm really hoping it's not a stress fracture because when i go a few days without physical training i feel like im falling back on my fitness, and i'm really trying to be it top shape :P what would you recommend?
