This OVATION original documentary follows his life, beginning with his Depression-era days working for the WPA through the optimism and Cold War paranoia that laced the 1950s. Pollock's relationships with both Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso are explored. Archival footage, including Hans Namuth's famous cinematic rendering of the artist at work, is coupled with archival photos of Pollock's time, when atom bombs stunned the world, Kerouac addressed the Beat Generation and jazz permeated the airwaves.

  • 'modern' art gets bad-mouthed for being something misunderstood, by sheer ignorance of people that fail to study and think about what it is they are commenting on... "Hey y'all! Grab the pitchforks and flaming torches! It's an abstract!"

  • placed into my playlist of Pollock, thanks

  • Mierda!!!!

  • US American abstract expressionism was funded by the CIA.

Did it all really have that much to do with art or promotion of nationalism?

  • @ninjaswordtothehead - Thank you for putting it in a much more straightforward response. A lot of people also don't realize 'modern' art means modern- these are the kind of people that buy faux-tudor style homes. True art captures the essence of that point in history-- a subjective reflection of the events going on and how they affected people. The last 20th century is more fascinating when looked upon in this perspective- and helps to explain how and why things happened the way they did.

  • @spiralcosmosart- as an art teacher, i have tried to teach children to do this, which they do not do instinctively. So... neener neener. See Ninjaswordtothehead comment below for some perspective.

  • this man never even drew a stick figure..itseasy to hate artist for being artist

  • Pollock.. now thats some paintings impossible to copy. :))))

  • @xlerosx nevermind. Jackson Pollock was good at prancing around canvas dripping paint on it. I suppose there's a certain intrinsic value, a meditative discipline and amusement in the infinite diversity of patterns of randomness and entropy this activity brings. It's existential. He's inspiring to me in that respects, but it's still a simpleton repetitive activity that a child can do. Somehow it had to initially get promoted it to rich people.

  • @ninjaswordtothehead

    Agrees too.

  • @xlerosx As in his boy friend named "Arthur"?
