Mysterious Unicylist in Butte Montana Taunts Death

... visiting Butte, Montana, in 2005 to put flowers on my grandfather's grave, I saw this man dressed in black riding a unicycle through the tombstones. I asked if I could film him... he just rode away.

Later, something very strange occurred. At the highest peak in Butte, the Bell-Diamond mine head frame, he appeared again.

I thought he might be following me- like an apparition of death, first the cemetery, now this mining graveyard high above Butte. Without asking, I started filming. He rode around the abandoned mine works, never faltering, effortlessly jumping through the deserted buildings. At one point, he traced the edge of the huge tailings pile- dangerously close to the several hundred-foot drop to Butte below.

Then, as I was standing under the head frame, he drifted right beside me. A cold draft followed him. We never spoke.

As the sun set, he was still there gliding across the desolate landscape- the only sound, an eerie, faint laughter of wind through the head frame and the crunch of gravel under his unicycle.
