  • I think I'm a little earlier than this. I repaired TTY and Crypto 1973 - 1977...usually in some smelly green tent.

Maybe missing Crypto KW-7 "Orestes" ? Wonderful piece of equipment...wish I had a couple of them.

Was the TTY Kleinschmidt or something more modern like Teletype Corp Equipment?

I also worked on this neat little FSK converter...name escapes me.

There was also a mini tactical TTY machine AN/TCC-14 or something like that. Could be a bit touchy to keep adjusted and working .

  • @97448able The TTYs that are correct for this unit and are now back in it are Kleinschmidts. TT-98 and TT-76

  • you are good your GRC-106 is beautyfull . I like it . what radio you have now.

  • @akechaicw I wish it worked. I cant get the amp running. ITs also a matched serial number set too.

  • You got this for free? Wow.

My first RATT rig was a GRC-26D in 1979. It was a brand new 25 year old rig. Then we went with the 122/142 RATT. Lastly, the IHFR.

    I retired in 1998.

  • @jvolstad No not free.

  • @97448able: Oh yes, the old KW-7. I was trained to use one in AIT...which was useless, since I never actually used one in the field. We used the KG-84 instead. Much, much easier to use!

  • This brings back memories. Thanks for posting this! I remember having to take everything apart in there and put it back together. It's been ages so I doubt I remember it all. I do remember the main teletype inside. It weighed about 120 pounds...so 100 is close enough. ;)

  • @RichJohnsonVideos Thank you. I'm horrible with these Military Designations, but I could still maintain them. From pictures found online, it appears these are the type of Kleinschmidts I am familiar with. Use a tuning fork to make the three spinning white dots on the motor "freeze" for correct motor speed that's it.

Not familiar KWB-9 but have fond experience KW-7 "ORESTES" the later upgrade.

Might be possible to acquire KW-7, most patch cord blocks destroyed

  • Acctually, there are a lot of hams running TTY still. There are a few nets around.

The TTYs have been replaced and are two TT-98s and one TT-76 paper puncher. I just cant get the GRC-106 amplifier to work, been in storage too long and needs a complete tear down and refurbishment, more than I can do. Im going to place the whole unit up for sale. I have a whole page on it and other mil comms on my website but youtube wont let me write my web addres here. email me killroy321@hotmail.com

  • @kb7ydu - Same here. 31C1PA4.

  • That would be pretty awesome to have a fully functional RATT Rig, but I'd hate to have to keep up with the 5kw generator as a civilian, especially with today's fuel prices. However, I'd probably just plug it in beside my house and use it as a Ham Shack. Not really much need for the UGC-74 Honeywell Teletype if there's no one on the other end to receive it, right?
